Wired for Kindness, Compassion, and Respect
In a world that often feels divided, research shows that humans are biologically wired for kindness, compassion, and respect. This workshop, led by Juliette Gyure, explores the science behind our innate ability to connect, support, and uplift each other. Through engaging discussions, real-life examples, and practical exercises, you’ll learn how to cultivate these qualities in yourself and foster them in your workplace and personal life.
Module 1: Understanding Kindness
What is Kindness?
Kindness is a visible action characterized by warmth and affection. It is not only about being nice, but also about contributing to the well-being of others without expecting anything in return.
Module 2: The Power of Compassion
What is Compassion?
Compassion is an internal experience characterized by empathy and concern for others. It is directed toward alleviating suffering and healing.
The Science of Compassion:
Research shows that helping others activates the same pleasure centers in the brain as personal gratification.
Acts of compassion release oxytocin, the “feel-good” hormone, which fosters positive feelings and social bonding.
Module 3: Can Compassion be Trained?
Building Your Compassion “Muscle”:
Just like physical exercise, compassion can be cultivated through practice. Research shows that compassion meditation can increase feelings of empathy and reduce stress.
Participants will practice a guided compassion meditation to strengthen their ability to respond empathetically in challenging situations.
Module 4: The Practice of Self-Compassion
What is Self-Compassion?
Self-compassion involves being kind to yourself, especially in moments of failure or inadequacy. It’s about treating yourself with the same care and understanding as you would a friend.
The ‘RAIN’ Mindfulness Exercise by Tara Brach:
Recognize what’s happening.
Allow the experience to be as it is.
Investigate with curiosity.
Nourish with self-compassion.
Module 5: Cultivating Emotional Intelligence
What is Emotional Intelligence?
EQ is the ability to manage yourself and your relationships effectively. It involves self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship skills.
Module 6: Respect in the Workplace
What is Respect?
Respect is honoring the inherent dignity of every person, regardless of differences. It involves open communication, empathy, and appreciation for diversity.
Creating a Culture of Respect:
Share examples of how to embody respect in professional settings, such as active listening, open dialogue, and celebrating diversity.
Reflect on the principles of “Ubuntu”—a person is a person through other people.
Creating Your Kindness, Compassion & Respect Plan for 2025
